Mitali Jahagirdar
is a Writers Guild Award-nominated writer for her work on Disney+’s JUST BEYOND. Her multimedia experience spans television, film, audio dramas, and games.
The proud daughter of Indian immigrants, Mitali spent her early years in Central Florida, then left for New York City, where she studied Economics and Journalism at NYU. Initially following a traditional pre-law path, she went on to serve as a paralegal at Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP working in residential mortgage-backed securities litigation, assisting corporations in internal investigations, and ensuring corporate compliance with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. All the while, she trained in improv and sketch comedy at the Upright Citizens Brigade and honed her narrative skills by writing spec scripts on the side.
Eventually, Mitali could no longer ignore her calling and decided it was time to pursue her real passion: film and television. She left the concrete jungle for hiking trails in Los Angeles to pursue her MFA in Screenwriting from UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television. It was during this time her feature thriller CONTAINMENT was recognized with an Alfred P. Sloan screenwriting grant. Following graduation, Mitali climbed the ranks of Hollywood by working as a writer’s production assistant on Amazon’s EXPATRIATES and a script coordinator on the CW’s DYNASTY.
Mitali’s thriller and sci-fi/fantasy voice has won her membership in a series of fellowships and labs: the CAPE New Writers Fellowship, the Film Independent Screenwriting Lab, NBC’s Writers on the Verge (now NBCUni Launch), the Sony Diverse Writers Program, the Netflix Created By Initiative, and recognition on the CAPE List.
Mitali received a Writers Guild Award nomination for her episode “Which Witch?” on Disney+’s JUST BEYOND, based on R.L. Stine’s graphic novel series with showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith (BEETLEJUICE, BEETLEJUICE). She has also collaborated with Netflix on several projects, including the development room for New York Times bestselling novel THE HENNA ARTIST starring Freida Pinto (SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE), an adaptation of the New York Times bestselling teen novel TIGER’S CURSE, and most recently an original series USED TO BE in a blind script deal.
Mitali has also expanded her love for narrative in games, acting as a writer consultant on EA Games’ AAA-title BATTLEFIELD 2042, as well as a staff writer in the Tribeca Festival select, Audible original audio series THE STRANGE CASE, helmed by Derek Kolstad (JOHN WICK) and starring Academy Award-nominated Vanessa Kirby (THE CROWN) and David Oyelowo (SELMA).
Mitali is based in Los Angeles and is represented by Jeffrey Frankel at McKuin Frankel Whitehead LLP.
